Apex Legends has been a staple part of the Electronic Arts EA Play event for several years and normally the game hasn’t disappointed when introducing new updates to the game.
Last year, it gave players their first look at Wattson and whilst it seems unlikely that a new legend will be revealed at EA Play in 2020, there should still be plenty of significant updates announced for the game.
For starters, you’ll be able to catch the EA Play event later tonight. Very late in fact.
The event will start at 4:00 PM PT on Thursday, June 18. For those of you reading this in the United Kingdom, that means it won’t begin until 12:00 AM BST on June 19.
Yep, midnight. You’ll want to have a little siesta (or lots of coffee) to make sure you don’t miss any of the action.
It should be a good show, so here’s a quick look at some of the big news we’re expecting to see announced as part of this digital EA Play event.
Apex Legends at EA Play - What will Respawn reveal?
New Crypto Town Takeover
The most obvious reveal we should see during EA Play is an announcement for the game’s next Town Takeover event.
Earlier this week the game started teasing the new event with banners filled with binary code adoring the arena.
It would seem as though the game’s next Town Takeover event could be Crypto themed.
So you can expect some new skins and content coming to the game pretty soon.
Trusted Apex Legends leaker, Shrugtal ( @shrugtal ), has also backed up theories that the new trailer for the event will likely drop during EA Play.
Quite when the event begins is still up for debate, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it suddenly dropped by the Respawn development team during EA Play itself.
Apex Legends Steam release
A big portion of EA Play is likely going to be dedicated to Electronic Arts games being announced as coming to Steam.
EA has previously announced that most of its extensive gaming library would be making its way to Steam at some point, and whilst Apex Legends hasn’t been named specifically, a few teasers suggest its coming soon.
In the past few months dataminers have uncovered evidence of some weapon charms that are distinctly Valve related. Such as the one below.
This new charm was called “v_charm_valve_potato” in the game files.
For those who don’t get the reference, it’s a callback to when your AI companion GLaDOS is transformed into a potato battery during the middle of Portal 2.
PS5 / Xbox Series X Announcment
One of Apex Legends’ fiercest rivals, Fortnite, has already announced it will be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X and so it seems only natural that Respawn will confirm a similar arrangement during EA Play.
After all, if you’re going to announce that you’re supporting next-gen consoles, you may as well do it during your own party.
We suspect there will most definitely be some sort of next-gen announcement and hopefully further details on how the game might benefit from this new era of console hardware.
