Employees at two Crystal Lake businesses were cited by the police for illegally selling tobacco to a minor.
Crystal Lake police officers completed a random check of two local businesses, the BP gas station at 281 W. Virginia St. and Smoke Depot at 435 Angela Lane, after they received complaints of the businesses selling tobacco to people under the age of 21, according to a news release.
Deputy Chief Thomas Kotlowski of the Crystal Lake Police Department said these checks happened on the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Under the guidance and supervision of Crystal Lake police officers, persons under the age of 21 entered and attempted to purchase tobacco products, according to the release.
Clerks or business employees of both establishments did not appropriately check the purchaser’s identification and completed the sale, police said.
Crystal Lake officers cited the employee who completed the sale to a minor, according to the news release. Adjudication hearings are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Crystal Lake Municipal Center, 100 W. Woodstock St.
